Description

Ingredients

1 large sweet onion (such as Vidalia)

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 tsp paprika

1 tsp garlic powder

½ tsp cayenne pepper

½ tsp salt


Instructions

  • Prepare the Onion: Peel the onion and slice off the top. Make a small cut at the base so it can stand flat. Carefully cut the onion into 12-16 wedges, making sure not to cut all the way through the root, so the onion can “bloom” when fried.

  • Make the Coating: In a bowl, whisk together flour, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, and salt.

  • Dredge the Onion: Gently separate the onion petals and dip the entire onion into the flour mixture, ensuring each petal is coated. Shake the onion to help the flour reach all the crevices.

  • Fry the Onion: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C). Carefully lower the coated onion into the hot oil and fry for 3-5 minutes, or until golden and crispy. Remove with tongs and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

  • Serve: Let the Blooming Onion cool slightly before serving. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch or spicy ketchup.

Spicy Blooming Onion: Increase cayenne pepper or add chili powder for extra heat.
