Ingredients
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (1 pound)
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 teaspoons caraway seeds
- 4 tablespoons butter (1/2 stick), room temperature
- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and lightly grease a baking sheet or line with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, and caraway seeds.
- Add the butter and work it into the dry ingredients with your fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Pour in the buttermilk and stir with a wooden spoon until the dough just comes together. Avoid overworking the dough.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it into a rough ball.
- Place the dough onto the prepared baking sheet and score an “X” on top with a sharp knife.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Let cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
- For a sweeter loaf, add 1/2 cup of raisins or currants.
- Fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary can enhance the flavor profile.
- Add grated cheese for a cheesy variation.
- To make it even more flavorful, add a pinch of fennel or caraway powder.
