Description

Caraway Soda Bread is a quick, no-yeast bread that blends the earthy flavor of caraway seeds with a dense, moist texture. Perfect for soups, stews, or as a simple side, this easy recipe requires minimal ingredients and no rising time!

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (1 pound)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons caraway seeds
  • 4 tablespoons butter (1/2 stick), room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and lightly grease a baking sheet or line with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, and caraway seeds.
  3. Add the butter and work it into the dry ingredients with your fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Pour in the buttermilk and stir with a wooden spoon until the dough just comes together. Avoid overworking the dough.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it into a rough ball.
  6. Place the dough onto the prepared baking sheet and score an “X” on top with a sharp knife.
  7. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  8. Let cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For a sweeter loaf, add 1/2 cup of raisins or currants.
  • Fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary can enhance the flavor profile.
  • Add grated cheese for a cheesy variation.
  • To make it even more flavorful, add a pinch of fennel or caraway powder.
