Description

Cruffins are a delightful hybrid of croissants and muffins, featuring buttery, flaky layers baked into muffin tins. Easy to customize with sweet or savory fillings, these pastries are perfect for breakfast, dessert, or a special treat. Whether filled with jam, Nutella, or custard, these homemade cruffins are bakery-worthy yet simple to make!

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 2 ½ cups (315g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup warm milk
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (plus extra for greasing)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
  • Optional fillings: Jam, Nutella, custard

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

  1. In a large bowl, mix warm milk and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add sugar, salt, and flour. Knead into a smooth dough for 8–10 minutes.
  3. Cover and let rise for about an hour until doubled in size.

Step 2: Roll and Layer

  1. Divide the dough into 8–10 equal portions.
  2. Roll each portion into a thin rectangle and spread softened butter over the surface.
  3. Roll each rectangle into a tight log and cut lengthwise to reveal the layers.

Step 3: Shape and Bake

  1. Coil the cut dough halves into greased muffin tins, placing the exposed layers upward.
  2. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Allow cruffins to proof for another 30 minutes.
  3. Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown.

Step 4: Add Fillings and Serve

  1. Once cooled, use a piping bag to fill cruffins with jam, Nutella, or custard.
  2. Dust with powdered sugar for a sweet finishing touch.

Notes

  • Savory Cruffins: Fill with cheese, ham, or spinach for a delicious twist.
