Perfect for holiday feasts or weeknight dinners, this easy-to-make recipe delivers rich, savory goodness in every bite. Customizable and beginner-friendly, these mashed potatoes will be your new favorite comfort food!

Ingredients

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes (or starchy potatoes)
  • 1 whole head of garlic
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • ½ cup heavy cream (or milk for a lighter option)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh chives or parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  • Roast the Garlic:
    • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
    • Cut the top off the garlic head to expose the cloves. Drizzle with olive oil and wrap in foil.
    • Roast for 30-35 minutes until soft and golden. Let cool.
  • Prepare the Potatoes:
    • Peel and cut potatoes into evenly sized chunks.
    • Place potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water, and add a pinch of salt.
    • Bring to a boil and cook for 15-20 minutes until fork-tender. Drain and return to the pot.
  • Mash the Potatoes:
    • Squeeze the roasted garlic cloves into the potatoes, discarding skins.
    • Add butter and heavy cream.
    • Mash until smooth, seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Serve:
    • Garnish with fresh chives or parsley and serve warm.

Notes

  • Variations: Add Parmesan or cheddar cheese for extra richness, stir in herbs like rosemary or thyme, or swap heavy cream for Greek yogurt or half-and-half for a lighter version.
  • Storage/Reheating: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat on the stovetop over low heat with a splash of milk or cream.
  • Freezing: Freeze mashed potatoes for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight and reheat with added butter or cream.
