Description
Ground Beef Philly Cheesesteaks offer a quick and delicious twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak. Made with savory ground beef, caramelized onions, bell peppers, and melted provolone cheese, this hearty sandwich is perfect for a weeknight dinner or casual gathering. Served in soft hoagie rolls, it’s a flavorful, satisfying meal that’s easy to prepare and customize.
Ingredients
For the Sandwich:
1 yellow onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 pound ground beef (90% lean)
½ teaspoon table salt
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
8 oz provolone cheese, sliced
4 hoagie rolls (7” each) or 1 French baguette, cut into 4 pieces
Instructions
For the Sandwich:
-
Sauté the Vegetables: In a large skillet, heat a little oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and green bell pepper. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and lightly caramelized. Remove from skillet and set aside.
-
Cook the Ground Beef: In the same skillet, add the ground beef. Cook over medium-high heat, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks. Once browned, drain any excess fat.
-
Season the Beef: Add the cooked onions and bell peppers back into the skillet with the ground beef. Season with salt, garlic powder, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir to combine and cook for another 2-3 minutes to let the flavors meld.
-
Melt the Cheese: Reduce the heat to low. Place provolone cheese slices on top of the beef mixture. Cover the skillet with a lid for 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and gooey.
-
Assemble the Sandwiches: Slice hoagie rolls (or French baguette) lengthwise, but don’t cut all the way through. Spoon the beef and cheese mixture into each roll.
-
Serve: Serve the sandwiches immediately while the cheese is melted and the filling is hot.
Notes
Spicy Philly Cheesesteaks: Add sliced jalapeños or hot sauce to the beef mixture for extra heat.
Mushroom Philly Cheesesteaks: Add sliced mushrooms with the onions and bell peppers for a savory twist.
Cheese Options: If provolone isn’t available, try mozzarella, Swiss, or cheddar for a different flavor.
Add Mayo or Mustard: Spread mayonnaise or mustard inside the rolls before adding the filling for an extra burst of flavor.
