Description

Homemade Butter Mints are a delightful, melt-in-your-mouth treat that combines a rich, creamy texture with a refreshing peppermint flavor. Perfect for holidays, parties, or as an after-meal refreshment, these mints are easy to make and require only a few simple ingredients. Customize with food coloring or experiment with different mint flavors to suit your occasion. These homemade mints offer the nostalgic, sweet touch that store-bought candies just can’t match.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon whipping cream
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, divided (plus more for dusting)
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure peppermint extract
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine softened butter and whipping cream. Use a hand or stand mixer to beat until smooth and creamy.
  • Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  • Stir in the peppermint extract and mix until fully incorporated.
  • If desired, add food coloring and mix until evenly distributed.
  • Pinch off small amounts of the dough and roll them into balls or shape into small mints with your hands. You can also use a small cookie scoop.
  • Dust the mints lightly with powdered sugar to prevent sticking.
  • Place the mints on a parchment-lined tray, ensuring they don’t touch.
  • Let them set at room temperature for at least 2 hours until firm. Store in an airtight container.

Notes

  • For a chocolate twist, dip the mints in melted chocolate after shaping.
  • Experiment with other extracts like spearmint or wintergreen for different flavors.
  • For a vegan version, substitute vegan butter and coconut cream for a dairy-free alternative.
  • Use molds or cookie cutters to shape the mints into fun shapes like stars or hearts.
