1 tablespoon (13g) granulated sugar

1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon garlic powder
3 and 1/2 cups (450g) all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting
For the Topping:
5 tablespoons (71g) unsalted butter, melted
3 garlic cloves, minced (or ½ teaspoon garlic powder)
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
¼ teaspoon salt
Optional after baking: ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
Optional after baking: 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
Instructions
Making the Dough:
-
Activate the yeast: Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a small bowl. Stir and let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
-
Prepare the dough: In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, and garlic powder. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil (or melted butter). Stir to form a dough, then knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
-
Let the dough rise: Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let rise for 1-1.5 hours until doubled in size.
Shaping and Baking:
4. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare a baking sheet.
5. Shape the knots: Punch down the dough, roll it into a rectangle, and cut into strips. Tie each strip into a knot and place on the baking sheet. Let rise for 20-30 minutes.
6. Bake: Bake for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown.
Preparing the Garlic Butter Topping:
7. Make the garlic butter: In a small bowl, mix melted butter with minced garlic, Italian seasoning, and salt.
8. Coat the knots: Brush the baked garlic knots with the garlic butter mixture. Sprinkle with Parmesan and parsley if desired.
Serve: Serve the garlic knots warm with marinara sauce for dipping.
Notes
Cheese-Filled Knots: Add a cube of mozzarella cheese to the center of each knot before baking for a cheesy surprise.
Vegan Option: Substitute olive oil for butter in the dough and topping, and skip the Parmesan garnish.
Herbed Knots: Add fresh or dried herbs like rosemary or oregano for extra flavor.
