Description

The Mint Julep Sweet Tea is a refreshing Southern-inspired beverage that blends the coolness of sweet tea and mint with the warmth of bourbon. This delightful twist on traditional iced tea can be enjoyed as a mocktail or with a spirited kick. Whether you’re hosting a summer gathering, relaxing on the porch, or looking for a unique drink to serve at special occasions, this recipe offers an easy and customizable way to enjoy a beloved classic.

Ingredients

1 cup white sugar

1 cup water

4 black tea bags

½ cup chopped fresh mint

2 quarts cold water

1 cup orange juice

6 tablespoons lemon juice

1½ cups (12 ounces) bourbon (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Simple Syrup: In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup of water and white sugar. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.

  • Steep the Tea: Add the black tea bags and chopped fresh mint to the saucepan. Remove from heat and let steep for about 10 minutes.

  • Strain the Mixture: Remove the tea bags and mint leaves, then pour the tea into a large pitcher.

  • Combine Ingredients: Add 2 quarts of cold water, orange juice, and lemon juice to the pitcher. Stir well to combine.

  • Chill: Refrigerate the mixture until thoroughly chilled, about 2 hours.

  • Serve: Fill glasses with ice and pour the chilled tea mixture over. If desired, add 1 ounce of bourbon to each glass and stir.

  • Garnish: Add a sprig of fresh mint and a lemon slice to each glass before serving.

Notes

To create a non-alcoholic version, simply omit the bourbon for a refreshing mocktail.

Adjust the sweetness by modifying the amount of sugar, or use a sugar substitute for a lighter taste.

Experiment with different citrus juices, like lime or grapefruit, to give the drink an additional twist.
