Description

The Pittsburgh Lent Fish Sandwich is a legendary Lenten meal featuring crispy fried fish fillets, creamy mac and cheese, and tangy coleslaw, all stacked inside a soft hoagie roll. This over-the-top, flavor-packed sandwich is a Pittsburgh classic, perfect for Lenten Fridays or anytime you crave a hearty meal.

Ingredients

  • 4 fried and battered fish fillets (cod, haddock, or pollock)
  • 1 cup cooked mac and cheese
  • 1 cup prepared coleslaw
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Hoagie Rolls:

    • Slice open each hoagie roll and lay them flat.
  2. Assemble the Sandwich:

    • Place one fried fish fillet on the bottom half of each roll.
    • Spoon a generous layer of mac and cheese over the fish.
    • Add a layer of coleslaw on top of the mac and cheese.
    • Sprinkle with black pepper to taste.
  3. Serve:

    • Close the sandwich with the top half of the roll and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Cheese Variations: Swap mac and cheese for a slice of sharp cheddar or provolone for a different cheesy flavor.
  • Fish Options: Use cod, haddock, or tilapia, based on preference.
  • Lighter Version: Try baked fish and a Greek yogurt coleslaw for a healthier alternative.
  • Add Some Heat: Include sliced jalapeƱos or a drizzle of hot sauce for extra spice
