Description

Discover the rich flavor of Lord Commander’s Buttered Turnips, featuring tender root vegetables, aromatic herbs, and a buttery sauce. This versatile, gluten-free side dish pairs perfectly with roasted meats and hearty stews.

Ingredients

  • Turnips
  • Shallots
  • Melted butter
  • Sliced butter
  • Tarragon
  • Minced garlic
  • Fresh dill
  • Smoked paprika
  • Cracked black pepper
  • Olive oil
  • Sugar
  • Capers

Instructions

  • Prepare the Turnips: Wash turnips thoroughly, remove the tips to create a flat base, but do not peel entirely.
  • Slice the Turnips: Place each turnip cut-side down in a wooden spoon and slice diagonally without cutting all the way through, creating connected triangle pieces.
  • Prepare the Shallots: Remove papery skins and tips from shallots; slice similarly to keep bottoms connected.
  • Make the Butter Sauce: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). In a small bowl, whisk together melted butter, tarragon, garlic, dill, and smoked paprika.
  • Assemble in Pot: Arrange shallots and turnips in a heavy, oven-safe pot. Pour butter sauce over them, ensuring it reaches all crevices. Dot tops with sliced butter.
  • Season and Bake: Sprinkle smoked paprika over the top, drizzle with olive oil, and season with cracked black pepper. Bake for 1.5 to 2 hours, until turnips are tender and golden.
  • Serve: Garnish with additional fresh dill and serve alongside your favorite main course.

Notes

Feel free to experiment with different root vegetables or adjust the spice level based on your preference!
